Asia at the heart of Olympic future: OCA General Assembly Welcomes New IOC President

The 45th General Assembly of the Olympic Council of Asia (OCA) marked a significant moment in global sports leadership, as Asia reaffirmed its central role in shaping the future of the Olympic Movement.

Held in Kuwait City, the Assembly brought together delegates from all 45 Asian National Olympic Committees (NOCs), along with esteemed guests from the International Olympic Committee (IOC). The focus was on leadership transition and Asia’s growing influence in international sport.

Outgoing IOC President Thomas Bach delivered an emotional farewell address, receiving a standing ovation. Bach, who will officially conclude his term on June 23, was honored for his visionary leadership and steadfast commitment to Olympic values.

Kirsty Coventry was formally welcomed as the 10th President of the IOC. A former Olympic champion and Africa’s most decorated female swimmer, she will assume office on June 23.

In her first keynote address as President-elect, Coventry outlined her vision for the IOC. She described Asia as “a central cog in the Olympic Movement,” highlighting the region’s energy and its recent experience hosting three consecutive Olympic Games.

She also emphasized an athlete-first approach, stating, “My first priority is to listen,” and reaffirmed her dedication to keeping athletes at the core of IOC decision-making.

Her strategic priorities include delivering elite-level Games and promoting Olympic values at the grassroots level.

The Assembly opened with “One Asia,” a vibrant cultural performance featuring traditional music and dance from China, India, Uzbekistan, Indonesia, Lebanon, and Kuwait. The performance celebrated Asia’s cultural richness and unity under shared Olympic ideals.

The Alliance of Independent Recognised Members of Sport (AIMS), led by President Stephan Fox, reaffirmed its strong partnership with the OCA. AIMS sports continue to contribute to inclusivity and diversity within OCA events.
