He reflected on how the ancient Olympic Games came to a tragic end when political and commercial interests overshadowed the spirit of sport. For nearly 2,000 years, the Games disappeared into history, but thanks to Pierre de Coubertin’s unwavering vision, the Olympics were revived 131 years ago. At just 29, Coubertin dreamed of a world united through sport and its values.
Bach, whose term as IOC President will end in June, spoke with deep emotion about the rare privilege of being in Ancient Olympia for the opening of this historic IOC Session.
