“Values first” – IOC President Thomas Bach opens 144th IOC Session at Ancient Olympia paying tribute to Olympic history and expressing confidence for the future

The 144th IOC Session opened in the heart of Ancient Greece, a place that holds profound historical and emotional significance. President Thomas Bach reminded everyone that the values of the Olympic Games, though timeless, are delicate and must be safeguarded. He reflected on how the ancient Olympic Games came to a tragic end when political and commercial interests overshadowed the spirit of sport. For nearly 2,000 years, the Games disappeared into history, but thanks to Pierre de Coubertin’s unwavering vision, the Olympics were revived 131 years ago. At just 29, Coubertin dreamed of a world united through sport and its values.

Bach, whose term as IOC President will end in June, spoke with deep emotion about the rare privilege of being in Ancient Olympia for the opening of this historic IOC Session. The very place where the Olympic Games began, this moment symbolized the alignment of past, present, and future—inviting everyone to pause and reflect on the enduring significance of the Olympic ideal. He also expressed heartfelt gratitude to Greece, the birthplace of two monumental gifts to the world: democracy and the Olympic Games.

With conviction, Bach reminded the IOC Members of the sacred values that the ancient Olympic Games were built upon, particularly the Olympic Truce (ekecheiria), which allowed athletes and spectators from warring Greek city-states to come together in peace.

This powerful tradition underscores the Olympic Games’ deep-rooted connection to unity and harmony. Bach’s words were full of gratitude, honoring Greece for gifting the world these treasures of peace and unity.

He also highlighted the emotional weight of being in Ancient Olympia, where the heart of Pierre de Coubertin, the founder of the IOC, rests for eternity. This eternal link between the ancient and modern Olympic spirit calls upon every IOC Member to remember their shared duty as stewards of this historic legacy. On this momentous occasion, AIMS, a proud IOC Recognized Federation, stands together with the IOC, with AIMS President present in Greece, sharing in the deep reverence for the Olympic journey and the collective responsibility to protect its future.
