Fédération Internationale du Sport Universitaire (FISU) celebrates it’s 75th anniversary. On 1 June 1949, visionary student sports leaders from across Europe came together in Zurich, Switzerland, united by a shared dream. Under the leadership of Luxembourg’s Paul Schleimer, they created history: the first international federation dedicated to the power of university sport.
FISU’s mission, etched in its founding constitution, has stood the test of time:
“To promote cultural exchange among students, organize international university events, and uphold the moral values of sport.”
Born amidst the challenges of the Cold War, FISU emerged as a beacon of hope, protecting university sports from political influence. The founding members – Italy, Austria, Belgium, Luxembourg, Switzerland, and the Netherlands – soon welcomed Spain and Lebanon, forming a collective dedicated to unity and peace. Carl Schneiter, FISU’s first Secretary General, became the driving force behind its early success.
In August 1949, FISU’s inaugural event, the International University Sports Week, unfolded in Merano, Italy. Against the odds, nine delegations came together to celebrate youth solidarity and the profound belief that sport could unite people in the spirit of peace.
By 1953, FISU had already begun to change lives. Its first educational project introduced the motto “Excellence in Mind and Body,” a philosophy that resonates even today. President Schleimer passionately declared sport a “genuine tool for training and education,” ensuring it became a cornerstone of student life.
What started with just eight member nations has grown into a global family, with FISU’s success firmly cemented by the landmark 1959 Turin Summer Universiade. This was not just a sports event but a triumph of FISU’s unwavering commitment to bringing the world’s youth together.
On this momentous day, we reflect with pride, gratitude, and admiration for FISU’s incredible legacy of fostering friendship, education, and excellence.
Warm wishes from the entire AIMS family, thank you for 75 years of shaping young minds and bodies through the transformative power of sport. Here’s to an even brighter future!
