The 2022 Commonwealth Games opened up at Alexander Stadium in spectacular fashion full of references to Birmingham, the Commonwealth culture, and history. 

Birmingham 2022 with no doubt will be not just one of the most important editions of the Commonwealth Games ever staged but with the incredible opening ceremony, it will be one of the most spectacular.

More than 5,000 athletes representing 72 nations and territories will compete in the 280 medal events until August 8th.

The stadium was packed to the last seat and Prince Charles and the Duchess of Cornwall entered the Arena in the classic Austin Martin.

Noble peace prize winner Malala Yousafzai received a standing ovation and delivered a powerful speech towards social change.

And when the host nation England arrived with a crowd rendition of We Will Rock You, the atmosphere was breathtaking.

CGF President Dame Louise Martin DBE stated “After such a difficult period when we could not be together in person this is a special and emotional moment where we can unite to celebrate the unique power of sport”.
