The beautiful city of Amman and the Jordan Olympic Committee were honoured with the rights to host the 2nd leg of boxing’s “Road to Tokyo” series, the Asian-Oceania qualifying event. The best boxers of Asia and Oceania convened in Amman to compete to qualify in the 13 weight categories to book their tickets, and 63 proud athletes made it.
HRH Prince Feisal, the President of the Jordanian Olympic Committee invited AIMS President, Stephan Fox, to be part of this event and the AIMS President congratulated His Highness and the Jordan Olympic Committee for the execution and quality of the world-class event.
Athletes from 35 counties competed and 14 of them finished on the podium, China finishing on top, followed by Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan. India and Kazakhstan won the highest number of quota spots and Jordan made history claiming a record number of 5 Olympic births and also winning their first-ever Asian gold medal in the men’s welter division. Congratulations must go to all athletes and to organisers.
Mr. Fox was welcomed by the Chairman of the IOC Boxing Task Force and IOC member, Mr. Morinari Watanabe; Mr. Fox commended Mr. Watanabe for his outstanding work.
Mr. Fox praised all involved – the IOC Boxing Task Force, Jordanian Olympic Committee, athletes and officials whom showcased the Olympic spirit throughout the event.
