Mission 89, a research, education, and advocacy organization dedicated to children’s rights, and the Alliance of Independent Recognised Members of Sport (AIMS) have announced the launch of a collaborative program module designed to combat human trafficking in sports through preventative initiatives.
The program consists of three online sessions designed to provide a thorough understanding of human trafficking, with a specific focus on its prevalence within the sporting world. Participants will gain valuable insights into safeguarding measures that can be implemented within the sporting context. Additionally, the module will outline the crucial roles and responsibilities of various stakeholders involved in sports, along with best practices for preventing human trafficking.
The program offers three online sessions, catering to different time zones for global participation:
● Friday, June 7: 8:00 AM – 10:00 AM CET
● Thursday, June 20: 5:00 PM – 7:00 PM CET
● Saturday, June 22: 10:00 AM – 12:00 PM CET
Human trafficking and smuggling in the sports realm has become a worldwide business. Hundreds of thousands of youth are trafficked through sports each year”, said AIMS President Stephan Fox. “All sport organizations must stand together taking united steps to combat child trafficking in sport. We must pay closer attention to the sport environments around us and ensure we uphold our duty towards protecting youth and educating the sport world.”
“This collaborative module with AIMS is a critical step forward in equipping the sports community with the knowledge and resources needed to combat human trafficking”, Ms Lerina Bright, Executive Director, Mission 89. By educating stakeholders and empowering young athletes, we can create a safer and more ethical sporting environment.”
Mission 89 has dedicated extensive research efforts to understanding the mechanisms of human trafficking in sports, especially by supporting projects that empower vulnerable youth and advocating for regulations that promote accountability within the industry. The workshop series directly results from their research, providing a framework for tackling a critical industry challenge based on real-world data and statistics.
The course is free for anyone to join remotely, and all participants will receive a certificate acknowledging their participation and commitment to this vital cause. International federations, sports ministries, national federations, clubs, and gyms are all encouraged to register and become part of the solution.
