IOC Presidential Handover marks leadership transition at Olympic House

On Olympic Day, 23 June 2025, a leadership transition took place at the Olympic House in Lausanne, where Thomas Bach formally concluded his 12-year presidency of the International Olympic Committee (IOC). Kirsty Coventry, elected earlier this year, officially assumed the role of IOC President.

The ceremony brought together IOC members, international federation representatives, athletes, dignitaries, and partners from across the Olympic Movement. AIMS President Stephan Fox was present in Lausanne to represent the AIMS and UTS community and to personally extend appreciation to President Bach for his longstanding collaboration and support.

A tribute video highlighted key moments from Bach’s presidency, including major reforms and initiatives such as the introduction of the Refugee Olympic Team and the evolution of the Olympic motto. In his farewell remarks, he emphasised unity and expressed gratitude for the shared journey with the global sporting community. He was honoured with the Olympic Order in Gold and named Honorary President for Life.

“It was a meaningful day,” said Stephan Fox. “AIMS was there to thank President Bach for his leadership and commitment to collaboration. We look forward to continuing this strong relationship with President Kirsty Coventry and her team.”

Kirsty Coventry’s first address as IOC President focused on continuity and collaboration. She acknowledged the challenges of recent years, praised the values instilled by her predecessor, and encouraged the Olympic community to continue working together to uphold and advance the mission of sport as a global platform for opportunity, inclusion, and hope, emphasising the importance of unity across the Olympic Movement, drawing on a personal story that highlighted the need to protect the strength and cohesion of the sporting community. She also paid tribute to her parents, husband, and children for their support throughout her journey in sport and leadership.

In a symbolic gesture, her first official act as President was to present Thomas Bach with the Olympic Order in Gold.

The ceremony concluded with a musical performance of John Lennon’s “Imagine,” a long-standing Olympic Day tradition, symbolising the shared commitment to peace and global solidarity.

As Kirsty Coventry begins her term as IOC President, AIMS reiterates its full support and looks forward to continued cooperation in promoting the Olympic values across all recognised sports.
