The 2nd Quzhou International Friendly Children Amateur Weiqi Invitational Tournament took place from November 17-22, 2024, in Quzhou, China, under the auspices of the People’s Government of Quzhou Municipality. This prestigious event continues to grow, showcasing Quzhou’s vision of becoming the “World’s Mecca of Go.” Beyond its Go heritage, Quzhou is steeped in cultural history, being home to the legendary Lanke Mountain and the Descendants of Confucius.
The tournament welcomed 14 teams from around the world, each comprising three young players aged 7 to 18. Europe was proudly represented by Romania, Ukraine, and Germany. Romania and Ukraine earned their places through the Pandanet Youth Go European Team Championship, while Germany received a wildcard invitation. The European teams performed admirably, with Romania finishing 5th, Ukraine 6th, and Germany 9th. Individual board prizes further highlighted the talent of European players.
The event was exceptionally well-organized, offering seamless transportation, luxurious accommodations, and a central playing venue. Participants had the rare opportunity to play teaching games with professional players Jiang Weijie (9p), Zheng Zaixiang (5p), and Wang Chuxuan (5p), inspiring the next generation of Go enthusiasts.
Cultural exchange was another key aspect, with visits to landmarks such as the Confucianism Museum and the Quzhou International Weiqi Culture Exchange Center. These activities fostered friendships and mutual learning among participants. Distinguished speakers, including Sun Guangming, Vice President of the Chinese Weiqi Association, underscored the significance of the event.
The tournament not only celebrated competition but also the shared values of culture and camaraderie, offering a strong foundation for the global development of youth Go. Congratulations to all the teams, especially Romania, Ukraine, and Germany, for their outstanding performances.
